Skeptics AI strategy & implementation · Charlotte, NC

Most AI initiativeswill never pay back.Yours should.

Skeptics is an AI strategy and implementation partner for mid-market and PE-backed companies. We find the few opportunities that actually move the P&L, prove them cheaply, and build them to production.

01 Why Skeptics

The name is the method.

Every vendor in this market is certain AI will transform your business. We aren’t — not until we’ve looked at your workflows, your data, your margins and your constraints. Skepticism is how we protect your capital: we rank opportunities by financial impact, kill the ones that won’t clear the bar, and build the ones that will.

The result is a shorter list and a higher hit rate. You get a strategy your leadership team can defend to a board, and an engineering team that turns it into working systems — the same people, start to finish.

Strategy & engineering, one team

No hand-off between the people who write the roadmap and the people who build it.

Outcomes, not deliverables

Every engagement is scoped against a measurable business result — margin, throughput, cycle time, revenue.

Built for the mid-market

Enterprise rigor without enterprise overhead. Fixed scopes, senior people, decisions in weeks.

02 Services

Four ways to engage.
One standard: it has to pay.

From a first assessment to a standing AI leadership function, each service is designed to compound into the next — or stand alone.

03 The ledger

Claims we hear.
Positions we hold.

A consultancy named Skeptics should show its work. These are the arguments we have most often with vendors, boards and ourselves.

AI will transform your business.
Parts of it. Which parts is the entire question.

In most mid-market companies, three to five processes carry a disproportionate share of cost or delay. Transformation happens there, or nowhere. We find them first.

Start with a pilot and see what happens.
Start with a payback model, then pilot to test it.

A pilot without a financial hypothesis can’t fail — which means it can’t teach you anything. Every pilot we run has a number it must beat and a date by which it must beat it.

You need an AI strategy before you build anything.
You need a strategy and a working system within the same quarter.

Strategy without implementation becomes a deck. Implementation without strategy becomes a graveyard of chatbots. We hold both in one team so the roadmap is written by people who have to make it real.

Just buy the platform. It does everything.
Buy where the problem is generic. Build where it is yours.

Off-the-shelf tools are right for commodity work. The opportunities worth real money usually live in your specific data, systems and process quirks — and that’s where custom engineering earns its cost.

Our people will never adopt it.
They adopt things that make their day easier. Design for that.

Adoption fails when AI is dropped on top of a process instead of built into it. We ship inside the tools your teams already use, with the humans in the loop where judgment matters.

04 How we work

Discover. Prioritize.
Build. Scale.

A four-stage method designed to put a decision in front of leadership early and keep capital at risk small until the return is proven.

01

Discover

2–4 weeks

We map how work actually flows through your business — operations, data, systems, people — and surface where AI could plausibly change the economics.

02

Prioritize

1–2 weeks

Each opportunity is scored on financial impact, feasibility and risk. You get a ranked portfolio, an ROI model, and a recommendation on what to build first — and what to ignore.

03

Build

6–16 weeks per workstream

Senior engineers ship production systems in fixed-scope increments, each measured against the payback target set in Prioritize. If a target isn’t going to clear, we say so and stop.

04

Scale

Ongoing

Proven systems are hardened, extended across teams or portfolio companies, and governed. Fractional leadership keeps the roadmap moving and the investment disciplined.

06 Who you’ll work with

Senior engineers who have shipped the systems — and sat in the room where they were justified.

“The hardest part of AI isn’t the model. It’s deciding what’s worth building, then building it so it still works in a year.”

Skeptics is led by engineers and operators who spent their careers building production software inside venture-backed technology companies and running businesses of their own. We started Skeptics because mid-market leaders were being sold either strategy decks or chatbots, and almost never the thing in between: a credible plan and the engineering to execute it.
